MARBLE AND GRANITE

MARBLE AND GRANITE

Marble is a rock widely used in buildings, monuments, and sculptures. It consists chiefly of calcite or dolomite, or a combination of these carbonate minerals. Marble is formed from limestone by heat and pressure in the earth’s crust. These forces cause the limestone to change in texture and makeup.

Granite is an igneous rock, which means that it was developed from molten lava deep within the earth’s crust. As the lava cools, it crystallizes under enormous pressure. It’s this crystallization that forms granite’s signature speckles of color — the longer the molten rock has to cool, the bigger the speckles, or grains, of color. In fact, that’s where granite gets its name: from the latin word “granum”, or grain.

Marble and granite are both exquisite rocks, and either will look gorgeous in your home. They are surprisingly similar–both are natural stones harvested from the earth through local quarries. Both are heavy, generally resistant to wear and tear, and highly versatile.

Difference between Marble and Granite

As we all know, Marble & Granite are natural stone that are quarried directly from Earth and both are very popular materials for kitchen and bathroom all over the world. But there is some confusing for many home owners which material is good for kitchen or which is suitable for bathroom. Even though marble and granite have some similarities, they have also differences as well. Both have excellent qualities and attribute that make them equally desirable, but they are very different in terms of performance depending on how they are used.

Origin of Granite and Marble

Granite originates by solidification and cooling of Magma deep within the earth over a period of millions of years. It is classified as an igneous rock because of its origin from the cooling down of molten Magma.  Marble mainly consists of Calcium Carbonate which is much softer than the components of granite.

Appearance

Granite and marble have a slightly alike aspects. Marble typically has veining whereas granite has more fleck-like, granular appearance but it can’t be stated as a rule. Based on its structure , natural stone has two general categories: Siliceous stone is composed mainly of silica, or quartz-like particles. It tends to be very durable and easy to clean.

Strength and Durability of granite and marble:

Granite and marble are resistant to heat, but you should always be careful. Granite is a harder stone than marble and holds up better to chips and scratches.

Granite or marble which is better?

Granite and marble are both very durable but must be sealed at least annually to ensure liquids do not gradually seep into the stone. Granite is a harder stone than marble and holds up better to chips and scratches.

Marble vs Granite:

The biggest difference between granite and marble is their absorbent. Basically, marble is softer and more porous than granite. Granite is an igneous rock, which means it was once molten and formed as it cooled deep within the earth.

How to tell the difference between marble and granite

Granite is a grainy, igneous rock that is composed of many different minerals. Marble has a softer look, due to its high concentration of calcite. Marble is mostly available in light white or pastel colors, although there are some darker slabs available. It’s hard to find a color that granite does not come in.

If you are looking for a material that offers a variety of colors and styles, is durable and is low maintenance, granite is an ideal countertop choice for you. If you want a countertop that holds timeless appeal, comes in a variety of colors and styles, and is durable, marble is a great choice
